Teaching Chapter 4 with the power dynamics between Lennie, Crooks, and Curly’s Wife is probably one of my favorite things to teach EVER. When I break down the power dynamics in this chapter my students’ minds are literally blown. It’s so rewarding!!!

The title came from the Robert Burns' poem, "To A Mouse" ...the best laid plans of mice and men often goes awry...We read this poem before we read the novel. Also, be cognizant of the hand motif. The word "hand" is on almost every page. Look at the characters' hands. It's set in Soledad. Look at what the prefix "sol" means!

I taught OMAM my first year of teaching, and we studied it through several critical lenses (feminist, queer, Marxist, etc). Even after teaching it, I was still thinking of more ways to teach it again. SO GOOD!!!! My juniors love it, and it’s consistently a fan favorite! We talk about American Dream, ableism, and marginalized communities. SO GOOD!!!

Before reading, I do an activity where I give groups of students a specific amount of popsicle sticks and tell them to build a house out of what was given. When the groups that barely have enough materials can’t build anything, I explain that’s what happens to Lennie and George. They don’t have the tools to build the life they dream of

I love using it to teach how no informational text could get you to agree it would be best to…do what George did the Lennie. But through the power of story, Steinbeck (tries to) push us to see it an inevitable. The power of story and why we need to not check our critical thinking over emotion.

When I was a junior and we read it, we got to have a trial for George at the end. I was the defense attorney and heavily pushed into Curly on questioning what he would have done to Lennie if he had gotten to him first. Jury loved it and gave him a not guilty.
