@dr.tommymartin: Rhabdomyolysis is serious and even if you are an experienced athlete, you are not immune to it. My sincere condolences to this athlete and her family. Please consider supporting the charity that was nearest to her heart. #rhabdomyolysis #newyorkcitymarathon #marathon #5minuteplus

How do we teach our teenagers in athletics to know the difference between being sore and Rhabdo?

I had rhabdo. It was SO painful. It was from a workout with pull-ups and thrusters that I went all out on. It was hot and I didn’t hydrate properly after the workout. Even though I’ve worked out for years and was in great shape, this was a competition and I hadn’t pushed myself that hard in a few months. My urine never turned dark but I could not lift my arms and was in constant pain in my lat area. As a CrossFit coach I’m now very careful about pushing people, especially new ones, and make sure they scale or modify movements and volume appropriately.

So I went to the gym with my husband for a couple days… I was sore… but nothing crazy. But I started feeling tingling in my legs and arms. They felt really weird. So as a precaution I went into the er.. they took blood and said i Had rhabdo. My case wasn’t typical. My grind was normal colored. The doctors told me that people with my ck numbers came in writhing in pain but I didn’t really have any. I’m glad I listened to my body and went in. Afterwards I developed full body muscle twitching and tingling that lasted for a year. Rhabdo sucks

After running a long race or a long training block is it better to drink water or more electrolytes like a liquid IV or LMNT

I’ve been hospitalized twice with rhabdo with CK levels ranging 70,000 😮‍💨 I still remember the first time the ER nurse being dismissive because I looked “fine” and then immediately getting admitted and hooked up to several IV bags as soon as they got the bloodwork back, crazy stuff!

Thank you for the tasteful take on this and accurate information. I was disgusted to see people going through her Strava saying it’s her fault because she wasn’t trained. Which isn’t true, and it’s all relative.

It makes 0 sense to me how she developed it enough to die in such a short race, considering her training more than supported that. She didn’t do longer runs, but her weekly mileage completely supported this so I don’t get how this happened.

I’m 2 weeks out from my first marathon and not going to lie, this has made me very nervous thinking about this possibility. I’m heartbroken for the family of the girl who lost her life 😭

I developed rhabdo in my arms after taking terbinafine and recovering from RSV. Inpatient for 5 days with ck levels over 90k. I have never experienced anything like it and would be lying if I said I get nervous when I workout now.

Thank you for the clear explanation. It’s always shocking to see an endurance athlete go down like this. My thoughts are with her family.

During a marathon, how would I be able to know that I have those symptoms?

The left photo is when I had it. My CK was 23000. I was in the hospital for a week. The size of the IV bags were insane! I over worked my left tricep. It took two days before I ended up at the hospital. My left shoulder was swollen. I marked it. An hour later it had grew. My left arm and shoulder looked like a cabbage patch kid. I was very healthy just to much of a workout.

As someone who lifts 5xs a week and runs very frequently, this is scaring me. I also did my first Hyrox, which I did train for 8 months prior, and want to do another one...

I’ve taken care of a lot of people in the hospital with this in Florida. Young and old. It doesn’t discriminate.
