@bergjordan: Today I’m recreating a really awesome portrait taken by photographer Michael Muller. For a while I’ve been wanting to do a Brad Pitt Portrait (try saying that three times fast on camera). Using a technique I learned to create a rim light against a black background, I then just added the colors and tweaked them in post. The trouble you might run into in trying it out yourself might be keeping the background dark enough which is just adjusting the angle of the key light along with keeping enough distance between yourself and the background. You said you were only using 2 lights, but you used 3

I think in the bread pit photo they probably use two red lights it looks an awful lot like they came in more from the sides

Think there is just a little bounce coming from underneath to help fill in that neck shadow some. They also must have been using a really large diffuse for the red, wraps really far around his face. Love the breakdown though, great to show people the technique!

love this step by step process actually demonstrating and explaining along the way why certain things aren't working - hell of a lot of ppl don't do it like that and it's so important for those who want to learn

That’s really cool, I’m surprised that red light could spill around the black poster board that much

Trul, great work, but I do think there is a key difference between the two of them. Brad's portrait has a bit more red that is spilling more up the side of his face and even hitting the side of his nose. I wonder if there's a reflector to try to spill that red light towards the more forward parts of his face

Why did you light from behind the sheet only to then block it out with a black board, what is the purpose of? What’s the effect?

why show the camera settings? they are useless unless the other person is using the exact same gear at the same levels and match the exact distance you are from the sources

For newer photographers reading this - turning the power down on a gelled light will make the colour more saturated. It’s counter intuitive at first.
