🏇 RACE OF THE WEEK – RELIVED 2016 Dubai World Cup: California Chrome’s Incredible Victory Despite a Slipping Saddle! By WinningStride Every Stride Tells a Story A $10 million race. A saddle slipping backward at racing speed. And a champion who delivered one of the most remarkable performances in Dubai World Cup history. On March 26, 2016, California Chrome returned to Meydan Racecourse in Dubai with unfinished business. A year earlier, the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner had finished second to Prince Bishop in the Dubai World Cup. Now five years old, California Chrome was back for another attempt at one of the richest prizes in Thoroughbred racing. Trainer Art Sherman and his son, Alan Sherman, had carefully prepared him for the challenge. Unlike the previous year, California Chrome had already raced at Meydan, winning a preparatory race in February. The $10 million Group 1 Dubai World Cup attracted 12 runners, including Frosted, Keen Ice, Mubtaahij and Hoppertunity. But nobody could have anticipated what was about to happen. The trouble began almost immediately. Breaking from post 11, California Chrome settled near the leaders under Victor Espinoza, racing wide around the first turn. But shortly after leaving the starting gate, Espinoza noticed something was wrong. His saddle was slipping backward. As the race continued, the saddle kept moving farther back, making it increasingly difficult for Espinoza to maintain his normal riding position. Meanwhile, California Chrome continued stalking the leaders. Mshawish, ridden by Frankie Dettori, helped establish the early pace, with Special Fighter also prominent. California Chrome remained within striking distance, racing three wide around the second turn. Approaching the final turn, Espinoza knew he couldn’t afford to wait much longer. The saddle was continuing to slide backward. So he asked California Chrome for his best. AND CALIFORNIA CHROME RESPONDED! Despite the equipment problem, he accelerated around the turn, swept past the leaders and took command entering the stretch. Espinoza concentrated on maintaining his balance while California Chrome continued opening his advantage. The farther they ran, the farther he pulled away. CALIFORNIA CHROME WON THE 2016 DUBAI WORLD CUP BY 3¾ LENGTHS! He completed the 2,000 meters on dirt in 2:01.83, establishing a Meydan track record at the time. Mubtaahij finished second, with Hoppertunity third. And the saddle? It had slipped so far backward that Espinoza had to dismount after the race to reposition it. The victory earned California Chrome $6 million, increasing his career earnings to $12,532,650 and making him North America’s all-time leading Thoroughbred money earner at that point, surpassing Curlin’s previous record. The performance was so extraordinary that it was later voted the 2016 NTRA Moment of the Year. For California Chrome, it was redemption after his second-place finish in Dubai the previous year. For Victor Espinoza, it was an extraordinary display of balance, judgment and horsemanship under difficult circumstances. And for Art and Alan Sherman, it was the reward for months of preparation and careful planning. A champion, a slipping saddle and a victory that remains unforgettable. 🎥 Watch California Chrome’s incredible 2016 Dubai World Cup victory below! 💬 Did you notice the saddle slipping when you first watched this race? 🎥 Race footage Racing Dubai. #winningstride #EveryStrideTellsAStory #CaliforniaChrome #DubaiWorldCup #HorseRacing
