Behavior Is Information, Not an Explanation A child refuses to enter the classroom. Another screams during transitions. Another becomes aggressive when the environment gets overwhelming. We often label these situations as behavior problems. But identifying something as a behavior doesn't tell us why it's happening. What we observe on the outside may reflect anxiety, sensory overload, communication difficulties, executive functioning challenges, frustration, learned patterns, or demands that exceed a child's current capacity. And two children displaying the exact same behavior may need completely different interventions. That's why understanding the function and context of behavior matters. Instead of immediately asking,
Behavior Is Information, Not an Explanation A child refuses to enter the classroom. Instead of immediately asking, "How do we stop this behavior?" consider asking: What's happening before the behavior occurs? When is it more or less likely to happen? What happens afterward? What skills might be missing? What environmental changes could help the child succeed? Understanding behavior doesn't mean excusing harmful actions or eliminating reasonable expectations. A child can be genuinely overwhelmed and still need support learning safer ways to respond. The goal is to address both the behavior and the conditions contributing to it. When we assume every challenging behavior is intentional defiance, we risk applying the same solution to very different problems. Behavior tells us something is happening. Understanding what it's telling us is where meaningful intervention begins. #NeurodivergentKids #ChildBehavior #AutismParenting #ADHDParenting #EmotionalRegulation
