@chicago_beyond: i read an article about this painting and RANNN to go see it first thing in person! One of the most expensive paintings ever purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a small but extraordinary masterpiece: Madonna and Child by Italian painter Duccio di Buoninsegna. The Met acquired this painting in 2004 for approximately $45 million, making it one of the most expensive acquisitions in the museum’s history. Created around 1300, this work is a rare example of early Italian Renaissance painting. Duccio was one of the most influential artists of his time, and his work helped shape the transition toward the more naturalistic style of Renaissance art. It’s fascinating to think that a painting created over 700 years ago is still drawing attention today. Sometimes the smallest works in a museum carry the biggest stories. 📍 The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. #themet #themetropolitanmuseumofart #newyork #newyorkcity #art
