@lizbettalksmoney: Option 4: have them pay us back by earning the money via washing, organizing, and selling their outgrown clothes. 🤔 The beauty of my allowance framework is that it is very much customizable to your family! The link to our Allowance Binder is in my bio, it includes everything you need to help you get started and keep you organized. 💚 #kidsandmoney #allowance #familyfinances #familybudgeting #financialliteracy
Maybe like have them give you the money as in a lease? Like you keep it the entire school year and if they lose it again then unfortunately they won’t be paid back. If they don’t lose them, in summer you give it back!

I would say have them pay you for the jacket and if they still have it at the end of the year you give them their money back.

I agree this is a lesson in responsibility. But as we all make mistakes, maybe the first time they have to pay half. If they lose it again they pay for all of it.

Since they lost it I say they should pay it. Maybe a 50/50 split or 70/30 split depending on the age. Teaches them a hard lesson but the likelihood they will take care of it better

I would say yes and maybe they will take care of it more knowing they paid for it themselves. 🤷🏻♀️

Pay for it themselves, especially since you already purchased it…we all know you take better care and pride of things we pay for ourselves!!!

I'm gonna disagree with all the comments, I think making them pay for the jackets will just be an unnecessary stress and make the entire allowance situation feel like a punishment, which isn't the point of what you're trying to teach them. Their consequence for losing their jackets has been not having jackets! Now it's fall, jackets are a necessity, and I guess my question would be: How do you intend to handle it if they refuse to pay? Are you going to forcibly take the money? What lesson would that be teaching them? I think, to them, this would be seen as you going back on your deal and making a hypocritical choice, because you said you pay for necessities, but you're forcing them to pay for this necessity. It's difficult to balance teaching your kids financial literacy and shoving them headfirst into financial anxiety, and I fear this situation would be the tipping point into the latter.

I think it depends how your kids are. Do they lose stuff often? If this is something that doesn’t happen really with your kids, I’d go easier with the consequences/or not make them pay anything and just talk to them, if they lose stuff a lot then I think they should pay at least half or in full.

I think it would be a good idea to have them pay for the replacements. If school is their "job" then this would also help prepare them for the same situation happening at work. Work provides you your with first uniform and if you need a new one, then you would have to pay for it.

I would do half and if it happens again then they pay for the next one in full.

I say either half or i like the "lease" they pay and if they still have them at the end of year you give the money back

What about giving them a loan? It could teach them how to pay back in instalments and even with small interest

Maybe they pay for 50% of the jacket this time so they are still learning the accountability lesson and if they lose the jacket again, next time they have to pay for 100%

personally I have done this. my kids get their needs all taken care of. however my daughters first yr she lost 4 jackets in 2 wks. I found 1 but lost 3. so I spoke with her about it and tried to find them so I told her how much each one costs and she can either pay me for each one at once or pay little by little (payment plan) she understood that things are expensive and even more when I'm a sahm so she did a payment plan and since that experience she became more aware of how many ch things cost and how crucial it is to take care of their stuff.

I would say 10 or older yes - payback 9 or younger no - but especially no if you haven't had this conversation warning first, they are just kids.

I am 24 and I still forget my jacket at work sometimes, but I once had my School labeled jacket with my name embroidered into the lining stolen and I don’t think that they should have to pay if their jacket got taken by another kid

With matching uniforms, others could’ve taken them not knowing it wasn’t theirs. I had someone take my letterman jacket before I got my name put on it, and I never got it back. As an adult I lose things all the time so I would likely show extra grace. I would buy 1 more set, get their names put on them or at least written inside if they can’t add it outside, and then if it happened again it would be on them.
