@typsyflypsy: I love coming across creative, handmade pieces when I’m out shopping, and this necklace immediately caught my eye! The artist makes these incredible chains out of REAL vintage U.S. silver half-dollar coins. I thought it was such a cool way to repurpose something old into wearable art. A couple of people commented on my original video questioning whether this was even legal, so I wanted to do a little digging because I was curious too! Here’s what I learned: The coins he uses are genuine pre-1964 U.S. silver half-dollars, which is actually a pretty interesting piece of American history. A little silver lesson: • 1964 and earlier: Half-dollars were made with 90% silver. • 1965–1970: The silver content dropped to 40%. • 1971 onward: Regular circulating half-dollars no longer contained silver. So what about the legality? Under federal law (18 U.S.C. § 331), fraudulently altering or mutilating U.S. coins is prohibited. But making jewelry and art from genuine U.S. coins isn’t automatically illegal. The U.S. Mint even addresses businesses that make jewelry from coins. The distinction is that you’re not trying to pass the altered coins off as legitimate currency or mislead someone about what they’re buying. In this case, the artist disclosed exactly what the coins were and that they were being repurposed into jewelry. I thought this was such an interesting rabbit hole to go down!
