@alegrakastens: “Optimization OCD” as it is being used online doesn’t always describe OCD accurately. If we are calling something OCD, it is imperative that we talk about what makes it OCD (obsessions, compulsions, etc.). #ocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #optimizationocd #optimization

optimization is more tied to OCPD

Arctantica :
I have diagnosed OCD. my optimization OCD caused me significant distress bc of the obsession of making sure I was doing things in the most perfect order. I would make my to-do list and then spend nearly an hour compulsively checking that it was actually the "right" order and essentially did all my tasks in my head before I could even begin doing my tasks. If I couldn't figure out the best order, it would turn into compulsively avoiding doing chores until it became something that was possible. Like my exposures for this included putting water in my water bottle before I put ice in it. I would compulsively avoid drinking the water bc the obsession of it having been made in a not optimal way.

OCD REQUIRES a compulsion which people forget. Everything has turned into ocd when it’s actually just anxiety, or ADHD, autism etc. Go get your nuero psych evals guys!!

I asked my therapist about optimization OCD and she said it’s kind of a tik tok trend right now and not actually a studied subset of OCD. She said if anything it’s “just right” OCD repackaged in a different name

as an audhder w ocd its so hard to tell whats what and i feel like theres so much overlap that then my rumination becomes "am i supposed to allow myself to do this autistically or sit w the discomfort OCDily" and i dont feel like my therapists get the nuance and im so constantly lost of what the Right answer is 😭 i wanna be gentle to myself but now i have to not engage w myself due to ocd so like !!!! but i need rules for my autism but im also not allowed to find certainty??? aghhhh

I believe I may have optimization OCD (formally dxd as OCD but haven't discussed this particular issue with my therapist) For me it presents in ways such as sometimes spending upwards of 2 hours to type 1-2 paragraphs because I am constantly rewriting it, double checking basic information to make sure I'm correct, looking up synonyms, etc. etc. It is such an intense focus to make the message feel as clear, concise, and topical as possible. I hate when people boil it down to completely normal behavior such as running two errands in one trip instead of one.

tbh i think ocd can be anything, it feels a little invalidating to say it’s not a recognized subtype and therefore treat it like it doesn’t exist for anyone, especially because ocd looks very different in everyone (not saying that you’re doing this, but to people in the comments). on the flip side, i also can’t stand when people try to diagnose themselves with something they see online, and i can tell that they start to do it when they post comments like that. kinda like they think they have ocd because they do things like optimize, but in my experience (as someone with ocd), it is consuming. to me, optimization can 100% be something that your ocd clings to. i also have just right ocd and it doesn’t feel like that at all to me, in fact, it doesn’t feel like any other “subtype” i have, it literally feels like it’s its own category. but there’s not enough research yet, so while i can’t claim that it is its own subtype, i also hope that people don’t discredit it as one yet, as it can be a very real thing for certain people. maybe not the way people without ocd are thinking about it, but to me it is very much real and very much consumes at least my life lol.

I was thinking about this. Like, do I have optimization OCD tendencies or is it just the OT for ADHD I did a decade ago?

I'm auDHD and feel best with efficiency and systems. My "optimizing" is not ego dystonic so it's not OCD.

I’m dxed with OCD & it takes me 2-3 hours to start cooking or buy food once I feel hunger because I ruminate about what the perfect meal or snack would be for that long, and I’m rarely happy with what I end up picking. I feel like that’s a good example of optimization OCD.

Optimization in this case tends to refer to the exact compulsion you say is missing so often. The obsession tends to be loss of time, not being productive enough, “wasting a day off”, fear of not doing things in the right way or perfect order. And the optimization comes in to try to calm those fears and anxieties. That is OCD, with typically mental compulsions, though some are physical as well. I’m struggling to see how that’s not being direct about symptoms. The only way I think that’s confusing is because this subtype is named after the compulsion rather than the obsession. But I will say, in my experience, this subtype does tend to come up for folks with ADHD as well. Possibly as a sort of ineffective rigidity stemming from a life of executive dysfunction.

I have optimisation ocd. I NEED to find the most optimal path when walking, doing the dishes, brushing my teeth. it takes so much time working it out and double, triple checking in my head. timing routes on my phone stopwatch and comparing. and if I stray from it I get actually so stressed that im going to be later and lose my job or my teeth will fall out etc.

One of my biggest compulsions is pure obsessive rumination that involves thought/process checking and those lead to executive dysfunction because it's so paralyzing and exhausting. It took 3+ years for my therapist to realize what I was experiencing wasn't just Audhd, anxiety, cptsd, and TRD, but pure o ocd. Brains are wild

I mean severity is key with these types of “disorders”. I’m not sure if that’s the right term. We can all share traits but only one of us is breaking into a cold sweat and cant function or hold a job.

If I plan my outing in a certain way to minimize drive time and maximize productivity and then something happens or I stall too long and I’m late and have to do things out of order I get so stressed and I hate myself. Intrusive thoughts of every mistake I’ve made start flooding my brain

This is why I was curious about OCD/OCPD but also skeptical that it was my experience, vs being better explained by trauma and ASD. Then my therapist started an OCD assessment and it turns out there's a LOT to OCD and my brain gives SO MUCH time and energy to these thoughts and things I didn't think were things I experienced actually are, and the idea of OCD in the media is not the way most people experience it

I think also it overlaps a lot with adhd! I’ve learned that yes I paralyze from optimization but that is coping and adjustment for my adhd and my habits on how I work!

The hard part about posting about OCD’s people will never understand that pretty much everything can become OCD. It’s the cycle so I am a person whose post went viral for optimization OCD tied to my existential OCD and then I got stressed about how many people are misinterpreting it, but I can’t be responsible for them seeing my issue as their own
