Her father tracked her progress from Pennsylvania, sending encouragement at every mile. After Apa texted him “Ow” and then “Ow ow,” his final message went unanswered. Despite efforts by bystanders, emergency responders and doctors, Apa died later Sunday evening. Her father says she suffered from rhabdomyolysis, a rare, life-threatening condition that causes muscle tissue to break down.
