1973: The psychology experiment that exposed psychiatry In 1973, psychologist David Rosenhan ran a controlled psychology experiment to test one question: Can psychiatrists reliably tell who is sane? Eight mentally healthy volunteers were sent into 12 U.S. psychiatric hospitals. Each claimed just one symptom: hearing vague voices saying words like “empty” or “thud.” Every volunteer was admitted. Diagnoses included schizophrenia. Once inside, the experiment began. The volunteers behaved completely normally. They spoke clearly. Followed rules. Told the truth. Still, doctors reinterpreted everything as illness. Taking notes became “compulsive writing.” Waiting quietly became “withdrawn behavior.” Here’s the fracture point: Other patients knew immediately. “You’re not sick,” they said. “You don’t belong here.” Medical staff didn’t. No one was released as sane. They were discharged with “schizophrenia, in remission.” When another hospital challenged the study, Rosenhan warned fake patients were coming. They flagged 41 real people as impostors. He sent none. The experiment didn’t prove patients fake illness. It proved institutions struggle to see people once a label is applied.
