Mind you, until very recently in the film industry older women were depicted only as mothers or as 'monsters'. A man was deserving of love no matter his flaws but a woman stopped being a human being the moment she started getting wrinkles.

Even when the story needed an «ugly girl» it was just a beautiful girl with glasses or a fat suit

as soon as he said "you don't have to be perfect to be loveable" I was like: No, it sells us the idea that MEN don't have to be perfect to be loveable. 🤣

It also misses how much deeply problematic behaviour is modeled in rom com men. Behaviour that is not going to get them positive attention in real life gets the girl…

My baseline expectation is now a man made of wicker who chooses to love me.

I am old enough to remember that men complained about the old romcoms, too. They claimed they gave us unrealistic expectations of how men should behave. So it wasn't enough that the average guy gets the perfect girl, they also wanted it to be effortless.

Men tend to forget they are hypergamous regarding looks (wanting hotter women) and age (wanting younger).

I literally just want someone emotionally and financially stable who isn't going to drain my time, emotions and resources. like... that's it... that's the bar dude. he's also going to have to be someone I am attracted to, and everyone has preferences that vary WILDLY when it comes to that

You only have to go outside and see real couples to easily invalidate their 6-6-6 argument.

I love that he says Romcoms used to tell men you a lovable as you are and then switches to using the term “everyone” when talking about being elite. He understood that women always needed to be elite now he’s upset that he thinks women are holding him to the same standards he had for women. Also who writes/directs/produces most Romcoms both in the past and now? MEN! So I would take it up with them not women.

I think it doesn’t matter how much we break it down a lot of men won’t get it or they’ll just put their own “thoughtful” spin on what it’s really all about

As I recall men hated romcoms … like I vividly remember them going on and on about how life is not a fairy tale and women should stop watching them

i hated romcoms when i was younger because I found it unrealistic that those way below avarage, imature loosers got the perfect girl every time 😅 but hey, let's not let an avarage stable girl get the handsome and put together man in the movies.. that could harm the avarage man 🙄

Old romcoms = a super average funny guy gets perfect girl. It is great and inspirational, according to the guy. In romance novels, an average kind girl gets a perfect guy - terrible and detrimental according to him. ???
