Women are triggered by this story because it's the most sane thing and it's how are bodies are designed. We should all be triggered. They’re sending it to each other. Feeling sick. Angry. Heartbroken. Unable to stop thinking about it. Remembering things they haven’t thought about in years. And as a therapist who works with trauma and the body, I keep thinking: Of course this is bringing something up. Nearly half of women have experienced some form of contact s*xual violence in their lifetime. So when a story like this surfaces, it doesn’t land on neutral ground. It lands in bodies that have learned to hold onto their drinks, that have walked each other home, that have frozen, that have been touched without permission, that have spent years wondering if what happened was “bad enough” to count, or that know what it feels like to calculate safety without even realizing we’re doing it. And even if you’ve never experienced anything resembling what has been alleged at Cornell, you may recognize pieces of the fear underneath it. The mind can read a headline while the body remembers something else entirely. And maybe that’s part of why this story is hitting so many women so hard. Gisèle Pelicot said something during her own extraordinary fight for justice that I hope we keep repeating: “Shame must change sides.” Shame does NOT belong to the woman who drank, the woman who trusted someone, the woman who froze, the woman who didn’t remember, the woman who didn’t report, the woman who reported years later, or the woman whose story makes other people uncomfortable. The shame was never hers to carry. If this story is activating something in you, please take care of yourself. You do not need to consume every detail to care. Step away. Ground yourself. Call someone safe. Reach out for support. And maybe tonight we teach our daughters that their bodies belong to them and teach our sons that another person’s body is never theirs to take. Shame must change sides. #traumainformedcare #womanembodied #somatictherapy #healingforwomen
