@mothershipsg: Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed will become the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate after defeating Republican Mike Rogers in the midterm elections, according to the Associated Press. El-Sayed grew up in the Detroit area, where his father had moved from Egypt to study at Wayne State University. A physician and epidemiologist, he led Detroit’s health department before running for governor in 2018. He lost the Democratic primary to Gretchen Whitmer and went on to lead Wayne County’s health department in 2023. Backed by Senator Bernie Sanders, El-Sayed narrowly defeated US Representative Haley Stevens in the August Democratic primary. He campaigned on Medicare for All, a proposal to cover all Americans through a single public health insurance programme. The Senate will be El-Sayed’s first elected office. He will succeed Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who is stepping down after two terms, keeping the Michigan seat in Democratic hands. #mothershipabroad #mothershipnews
