This likely an compliment, not "sh*t talking" behind your back. In Japanese culture, having a big appetite is a positive thing. They even have a word for big eaters, "ōgui," and "kuishinbō" for someone who really loves food. There's also "oishisō ni taberu," which basically means eating like you're really enjoying it. The Japanese appreciate someone who can put away a serious amount of food, enjoys every bite, and has good manners about it. It's not about being a glutton... it's about genuinely appreciating the food and the person who made it.
