### SOUTH AFRICA: A DIFFERENT ERA, A DIFFERENT REALITY These historical photographs offer a glimpse into an earlier South Africa: crowded railway carriages, commuters travelling to work, and a Johannesburg city centre filled with tall commercial buildings and busy streets. They capture a country with functioning transport networks, an active urban economy and infrastructure that supported daily business and movement. But the images also raise an important historical question: who enjoyed the full benefits of that development? Under apartheid, Black South Africans were subjected to discriminatory laws that restricted where they could live, work and travel. Many depended on overcrowded public transport while being excluded from equal economic opportunities. Today, the challenge is not simply to romanticise the past or condemn everything about it. It is to understand what was built, who benefited, who was excluded, and why so much infrastructure has deteriorated. South Africa cannot build its future by ignoring the lessons of its past.
