Washington, D.C., USA — Democrats have won control of both chambers of Congress following major victories in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections. The party made significant gains in several states, ending Republican control of the House and Senate and delivering a major setback to the president's legislative agenda. House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged the Republican losses, saying: “From the first day of this election, we knew that to keep the House and sustain our majority, we would have to defy more than a century of midterm history,” He added that holding the House would be difficult for the president's party. Democratic victories included Jamie Ager in North Carolina and Rebecca Bennett in New Jersey. Hakeem Jeffries is now positioned to lead the Democratic-controlled House. Voters' concerns over rising living costs, fuel prices, the Iran war and government corruption reportedly contributed to the Republican losses. With Democrats controlling both chambers, they will have greater power to investigate the administration, challenge its policies and block legislation. The results mark a major shift in Washington's political balance ahead of the final two years of the presidential term. Source: Associated Press, NPR and New York Post.
