I’m Paiute from Nevada. When I lived in the Bay Area, I remember hiking among the redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains for the first time. I felt this profound mix of beauty, pride, and sadness, thinking of the Indigenous people who once walked that land freely, only to experience displacement and the loss of so much. There I stood, enjoying a freedom that had been taken from generations before me. It’s a feeling I’ve never forgotten. So when I saw Deb Haaland had been elected governor, I cried. Not just because she won, but because of what her victory represents. To see an Indigenous woman make history in a country where our ancestors were denied so much means more than I can put into words. ❤️
