A lot of employers include “and other duties as assigned” in their job descriptions, but that doesn't mean they have unlimited authority to demand anything they want. Legally, employers generally CAN change or add job responsibilities, even outside the original job description. However, there's a big difference between asking a receptionist to help with additional office tasks and suddenly expecting her to perform physically demanding labor involving heavy lifting and climbing. Workplace safety laws still apply, and any applicable disability accommodations must be respected. My advice? Get the new expectations in writing, document everything, and don't assume that just because your employer says something is required, it's automatically legal. And personally? If you hired me to run your front office, don't suddenly act surprised when I'm not interested in becoming your maintenance crew. 😂
