i had thesr issues when i lived with my mother, as soon as i turned 18, i got myself a job and with my first paycheck i bought myself a phone. i got an iphone 7 back in 2021, and at walmart i got an att prepaid plan. it was great, until my mom threatened to smash my phone because me having my own phone and plan used "her internet" that my deployed stepdad paid for and had no idea she was treating me that way. but yes, buy your own, and get a prepaid plan to start with if you dont have credit yet!
