This feels silly now that I know so much more about OCD, but for the longest time, I truly thought OCD compulsions had to be physical. Checking, washing, repeating behaviors... things other people could actually see. So I didn't really believe I had OCD... despite an actual diagnosis. I just didn't understand it. ...until I learned more about how OCD can actually show up & realized how much of mine was happening completely inside my head. Replaying the same question until I felt certain. Googling or asking for reassurance. Mentally reviewing memories. Trying to suppress an intrusive thought or replace it with a "better" one. Arguing with thoughts because they felt unacceptable or unlike me. This is often described as "Pure O," or "purely obsessional" OCD, but the name can be misleading because there are compulsions... they're just often mental & much harder for other people to notice. That was a huge realization for me. I wasn't "just overthinking." I was getting caught in the same OCD cycle of doubt, anxiety, compulsions, temporary relief... & then more doubt. Learning to recognize the mental compulsions I had been doing for years made recovery feel so much less confusing #ocd #pureocd #rocd #intrusivethoughts #rumination
