Talarico Accuses Musk of Trying to Buy Texas Senate Seat Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico used a rally in El Paso on Monday to accuse Elon Musk of bankrolling the effort to elect Republican Ken Paxton to the U.S. Senate from Texas, in what has become the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history. "Elon Musk is trying to buy this Senate seat in Texas," Talarico said. "Elon Musk wants our land. He wants our water. He wants our tax dollars. And he wants his very own personal United States senator." According to federal filings reported this month, Musk contributed $158 million in September to the Senate Leadership Fund, which transferred the same amount to Texas PAC, a Republican super PAC supporting Paxton, and gave a further $10 million to another pro-Paxton group, Lone Star Liberty PAC. Super PACs spend independently of a candidate's own campaign. Musk, the chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of X, lives in Texas and has moved much of his business empire there. Talarico, a 37-year-old state representative, contrasted the spending with his own campaign's funding. "Our movement is funded by 1.3 million individuals who have donated to this campaign," he said. "Ken Paxton is funded by one dude." His campaign says it raised $64 million from July through September, more than triple Paxton's total, with 97% of donations under $100. After the remarks drew wide coverage, Musk posted on X that there is "something deeply wrong with Talarico." Talarico replied that there is "something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator." Talarico has also drawn support from members of a Republican presidential family: Barbara Bush contributed to a PAC backing him, and Neil Bush said his break with tradition was motivated by concern about Paxton's record and admiration for Talarico. A Texas Public Opinion Research poll conducted October 15–18 put Talarico ahead of Paxton, 51% to 47%. The election is November 3. The accusation that Musk is trying to buy the seat is Talarico's; the contribution figures are drawn from federal filings. Sources: USA Today; The Guardian; Houston Public Media Will Langan
