How a Log Becomes a Mushroom Farm A single fresh oak log can produce shiitake mushrooms for four years. Cut it in late winter while the tree is dormant, about three feet long and six inches wide, and let it rest two weeks before wild fungi can move in. Drill holes one inch deep and six inches apart in a diamond pattern, tap in shiitake plug spawn, then seal every hole and both cut ends with melted wax to lock in moisture and keep other fungi and insects out. Stack the log off the ground in full shade and water it if two weeks go by without rain. After six to twelve months, white spots on the cut ends tell you the mycelium has taken over the whole log. Soak it in cold water for a day and shiitakes push out through the bark about a week later. From then on, every heavy rain brings a new flush. #mushrooms #shiitake #homestead #growyourownfood #gardeningtiktokcontest
