Across a career spanning more than five decades, Frieda went from styling some of the world’s most famous faces to building a haircare name recognized in homes around the globe. His chair welcomed an extraordinary list of clients over the years, including: • Princess Diana • Madonna • Nicole Kidman • Scarlett Johansson • Gwyneth Paltrow • Twiggy • Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis • Diana Ross • Mick Jagger • Paul McCartney • Joanna Lumley and more One of his defining early moments came in 1976 when he created Joanna Lumley’s famous “Purdey” haircut for The New Avengers, a style that became one of the era’s most recognizable looks. Frieda’s influence eventually moved far beyond the salon chair. With Gail Federici, he launched Frizz Ease in 1988 and later Sheer Blonde, turning the John Frieda name into an international haircare brand. The business was eventually acquired by Kao in 2002 for a reported $450 million. He spent his life making celebrities camera-ready, but perhaps his greatest achievement was taking salon expertise once reserved for famous clients and putting it into products millions of ordinary people could use at home.
