The way most of us picture pushing during labor is sometimes working against your pelvic floor 🙅‍♀️   As a pelvic floor physical therapist, this is one of the BIGGEST disconnects I see between what people are told to do during birth and what the body actually needs.   💗 Lying flat on your back fights gravity instead of using it 💗 Staying on your back or in one position doesnt allow your sacrum to move to open up the birth canal 💗 Sidelying position is actually shown to minimize the risk of more severe perineal tearing and postpartum pain 💗 Holding your breath while bearing down can actually tense your pelvic floor muscles instead of relax them   Birthing moms need options. Sometimes a different position and a different breath can work with you! Pelvic floor therapists, L&D nurses, and OBs need to work together. We need healthy moms and babies and healthy bodies and pelvic floors afterwards.
