@inwardora: A phenomenon that looks like something out of mythology, but is very real 🤟 In September, photographer Florian Riou captured an extraordinary sight above Corsica: red sprites, also known as red faries or transient luminous events. These rare electrical discharges occur between 50 and 90 kilometres above thunderstorm clouds. Unlike ordinary lightning, they travel upwards into the atmosphere, appearing as giant red flashes that last just a few milliseconds. First recorded from the ground in 1989, these elusive phenomena remain among the least understood spectacles of our atmosphere. And here’s the remarkable part: they happen so quickly that the human eye can barely register them. Capturing one requires not only the right equipment, but anticipating the exact conditions before the storm even unfolds. A reminder that some of Earth’s most extraordinary phenomena happen just above our heads, almost entirely unseen. 📸 Credit: @florian.riou Follow @inwardora for stories that make your scroll worth it #meteorology #storm #extraordinary #lightning #thunderstorms
