Tap the link In my bio to start the drawing drills course. If your pencil shading always looks flat, you might be afraid of pushing your values dark enough. This is one of the most common problems I see when artists are learning how to draw. Everything gets shaded within a narrow range of midtones. The drawing has light and shadow, but there’s very little separation between them. The result is a drawing that lacks depth, contrast, and a convincing sense of three-dimensional form. Here’s something important to understand about shading: values are relationships. Your darkest dark establishes one end of the range, and the lightest light establishes the other. Everything in between gets its meaning from those relationships. If you’re treating your darkest shadows like midtones, you’ve compressed the entire value range and left yourself very little room to describe the transitions into the light. Practice grouping your shadows into larger shapes first, then gradually push your darkest areas further while preserving the lighter values. You don’t need to make everything dark. You need enough contrast for the light to actually feel like light. Don’t be afraid of the dark! #howtodraw #drawingtutorial #drawinghowto #artlesson
