My family owned a brownstone in Spanish Harlem for nearly 100 years and then decided to sell it in 2014. I’m still mad about it 😭

As much as I love how New York has turned around, it’s almost gone too much in the other direction. It was a working people’s city and now you can only afford to live there if your a millionaire or a finance bro

Compared to today, those prices seem cheap, but back then it was definitely a struggle. I work with older adults, and I love hearing their stories about buying their first homes. One centenarian told me his down payment was $5,000, and he had to beg and borrow from so many people just to come up with it. That amount sounds small to us now, but back then it was no easy feat, especially for a Black man and his family. Still, I'd happily take a $5,000 down payment today. 🫠
