It means, do your sins privately and do not make it a public affair for the audience to see who may end up following you, imitating you, using your language, mirroring your lifestyle, your living style that will turn them exactly like you. That’s what Allah meant. Those with a past, I know some people who used to drink, gamble take drugs and they stopped for few years, then later in life, a challenge came before them and they couldn’t handle it, they resorted to their old habits. Some habits doesn’t die, they get resurrected, so it’s best your future spouse knows because of this resurfaced in later life, and then they learn this person used to drink, gamble or took drugs, should of said it because, they would of not married them because the probability of reoffending may still be there.
