Every official marathon is 42.195 km, and that distance traces back to one race: the 1908 Olympic marathon in London, run from Windsor Castle to the White City stadium. For about nine miles the leader was Charles Hefferon, an English-born runner who raced for South Africa. By his own account he accepted a drink of champagne two miles from home, got cramp and was passed. Dorando Pietri was disqualified for being helped over the line, so Johnny Hayes won and Hefferon took silver, about 48 seconds behind. The athletics union had picked Hefferon over Ken McArthur, who had won the trial; in 1912 McArthur won the Olympic marathon, with Chris Gitsham second. Olympedia and AIMS differ slightly on when the distance was formally fixed, so we say only the 1920s.
