I think one of the biggest reasons so many men struggle with discipline is because they've become accustomed to making themselves feel comfortable whenever something becomes difficult. You feel bored, so you reach for your phone. You feel stressed, so you look for something to eat. You feel lonely, so you turn to something that gives you a few minutes of pleasure. You have something important to do, but because you don't feel like doing it, you convince yourself you'll start tomorrow. And slowly, these responses become habits. You stop asking yourself whether what you're doing is actually good for you. You just want whatever uncomfortable feeling you're experiencing to go away. But the problem is that most things worth achieving require you to do things you don't always feel like doing. Getting into shape means training when you'd rather stay at home. Building something meaningful means working when you'd rather be entertained. Overcoming a bad habit means learning to say no to yourself, even when every part of you wants to give in. And none of that becomes easier when you've spent years responding to every uncomfortable feeling by looking for an escape. I think we need to understand that discomfort isn't always something we need to get rid of. Sometimes it's something we need to learn to tolerate. You can feel bored without reaching for your phone. You can feel stressed without immediately looking for a distraction. You can feel tired or unmotivated and still do what needs to be done. Because the more you practise choosing what's right over what feels good in the moment, the less control those temporary feelings have over your decisions. Discipline isn't about never wanting comfort. It's about not allowing your desire for comfort to decide how you live your life.
