to everyone who has ever said "girl how are you single" to me, i have a few things to report. first of all, thank you, i did think that outfit went well. second, i need you to know what's really going on, because you all seem to think i'm out here running some kind of operation. you see me being loud at the table, making the whole group laugh, posting a cute picture from a place with nice lighting, and you've decided i've got eleven men in my phone, sorted by day of the week. my friends say "oh, she's got options." guys say "you probably have a whole roster." ma'am. sir. i'd love to meet this roster. who's on it? because the last thing i got from a man was a text from my uncle about the family group chat 😭 i wish you could see what's actually behind the curtain. i'm home at 9:30 on a saturday, in the big t-shirt, eating cereal over the sink. i hate dating. i don't think i can say this loud enough. i hate first dates. i hate telling the story of my job to a stranger. i hate "so what do you do for fun." i hate figuring out whether he's nice or just wants something. i hate that every man who hears i'm funny seems to think that means i don't need anything. i've gotten so good at being fun that people think i can't be hurt. that's the trap of it. when you're the pretty funny one, you get treated like a good time, and nobody ever thinks you're the one who'd like to be picked up from the airport. they don't think you'd like someone to notice when you've gone quiet. so here's the part i don't say at the table, because it would ruin the bit. i want one. just one man. i don't want options, i want a person. i want one guy who thinks i'm hilarious and also asks if i've eaten. i want my forehead kissed for no reason. i want to be called something annoying like "baby" in the grocery store. i want to be babied, okay, i said it. i spend all day being the capable one who's got it together and has a comeback for everything. i would like to go home to somebody and be small for a little while. and i know some of you are the same way. you're the funny friend. you make everyone else comfortable. then you go home and wonder why nobody's ever really tried with you. being pretty and funny isn't a roster, and being wanted by a crowd isn't the same as being loved by someone. and i'm good, really. i've got my friends and a life i like. i don't need saving. i'd just like to retire. so please cancel the rumors. the roster has one open spot, it has always had one open spot, and i'm not looking for a team. i'm looking for one man who wants to baby me.
