Alright maybe this is an extreme example, but every time I post a 0RIR set there are always a bunch of "you had one more" (or two, or three) comments from people who have no idea how to gauge reps in reserve. It's true that it can be harder to judge proximity to failure when watching someone else train, but just keep a few things in mind... First off, failure doesn't look the same on every exercise. It doesn't always show up as a "gradual slowdown in rep speed" like everyone keeps repeating. It depends on the resistance profile of the movement and where the muscle is strongest/weakest within the range. Many exercises will have that gradual slowdown as you approach failure. Others, like a dumbbell lateral raise for example, will have no slowdown at all but you'll eventually just lose the ability to complete the end range. So you can't just look at the overall rep speed and conclude it wasn't 0RIR simply because you didn't see an all out grinder on the final rep. Second, form has to be considered. An experienced lifter knows when another rep is technically possible but that it would require an excessive degree of technique breakdown to achieve. "0 reps in reserve" means another rep can't be completed using reasonably standardized form. That's not to say a bit of form deviation is necessarily bad, but there are levels to it. Third, a lot of people dramatize their sets on social media which can give a skewed perception of what training to failure actually looks like for someone less experienced. 📱 To get my complete TrainWise system that shows you exactly how to build a leaner, stronger, more muscular body with just a few hours in the gym per week, comment or DM "PLAN" and I'll send the link.
