@mollypelletier.rd: A low-acid diet can help in the short term by calming irritated tissue. But if you don't understand what your stomach does with a meal, it's hard to make the changes that actually prevent reflux. The upper part of your stomach, called the fundus, has to relax and stretch to make room for food. When you eat fast and barely chew, food arrives faster than it can stretch, and it backs up like a traffic jam. That stretch and pressure is one of the main things that makes your LES (the valve at the top of your stomach) relax, and when it opens, some of that meal comes back up. In one study, healthy adults who ate the same meal in 5 minutes instead of 30 had more reflux episodes in the hour afterward. At your next meal, slow down and chew each bite until it's close to applesauce. Your stomach doesn't have teeth. Chewing well naturally slows your pace, which gives your stomach time to stretch and accept the food without the traffic jam. Share this with someone who's struggling with reflux, and follow along for evidence-based strategies to put your GERD or LPR into remission. For how to breathe to support your LES, check out the breathing video on my page.
