@nyunfilter: This is an educational video about the two fires that destroyed the business district of Bolivar, New York. Bolivar is a village in Allegany County, New York. It was incorporated in 1832. During the 19th century oil boom, the village was located within the Penn Grade crude oil field. Main Street was lined with wood-frame commercial buildings, including hotels, dry goods stores, saloons, a Masonic Temple, and an opera house. On January 10, 1869, a fire began in a dry goods store on Main Street and spread through the business district. The commercial block was destroyed. The reported loss was $25,000. The village rebuilt with wood-frame buildings on the same lots along Main Street. On March 14, 1901, the New York Times reported "the worst fire that has visited Bolivar in years." The row of wooden buildings between the Masonic Temple and the meat market burned. The Opera House was destroyed. The reported loss was $15,000, partially covered by insurance. The oil field declined in the 20th century. Bolivar remains a village in Allegany County. This is a factual presentation of documented historical events. 📍 Bolivar, Allegany County, New York #Bolivar #NewYorkHistory #AlleganyCounty #HiddenHistory #FireHistory

At that time - Bolivar 30,000, neighboring Richburg 50,000. Today maybe 3,000 - 1,000. 😱
