@reyganthenp: Let’s talk pain with IUD insertions !!! As a WHNP who was also terrified of getting an IUD because of all the scary stories I saw on social media, it wasn’t until I learned the process of inserting an IUD that gave me enough confidence to get one myself. And luckily I had such an incredible experience! With the fear of pain being one of the most common reasons people avoid IUDs, I wanted to walk tall through the insertion process and explain to you the 3 most common times that people feel cramping/pain, and WHY you’re feeling what you are. AND MOST INPORTANTLY, make sure you’re talking with your provider before your appointment on what pain management strategies they can offer!!! Pain management should be offered to EVERYBODY!! #nursepractitioner #womenshealth #iudinsertion #obgyn #whnp
You didn’t mention the HOOKS on the ends of the tenaculum that pierce your cervix!

I was given no pain medication for my IUD insertion and ended up being manually dilated 🙃 I almost passed out. I had done so much research and knew what to expect, but was not at all prepared for manual dilation. Didn’t even know it was a possibility

The pain of the IUD insert- not bad! The pain of the uterine perforation and laparoscopic removal- bad!

I opted for sedation and a lidocaine injection at planned parenthood and didn’t even feel the insertion! Definitely some cramping and nausea from meds after but soooo worth it. Highly recommend asking your local planned parenthood if they offer this if you’re nervous about pain!

Mine went very well! I got a prescription from my psych for Xanax and took it an hour before, as well as ibuprofen. Before the placement I also got a cervical block.

My midwife brought up birth control at my last prenatal appointment and I told her I had an IUD before. She asked if I wanted to do that again and I said I wasn’t sure. She IMMEDIATELY went into all the different pain management options they have now 😭

Mine is pain and also trauma. If I don’t have a very trauma informed provider it is so triggering. My provider was great and I still had a panic attack

I’m pregnant rn bc I choose the pill😂 but my doctor even told me “you’ll hate me that day” when I asked about the iud. So that definitely scared me away even more !!

I’m sorry but as a woman with endometriosis and vaginismus, talking about the pain doesn’t change anything

I just feel like there are so many issues with them. I personally know 3 people who have had major issues (one had it embedded in her uterus and had to have it surgically removed, 2 had intense pain for months after insertion resulting in removal) and I have personally seen so many people getting pregnant with them. That may just be perception but I don’t see people saying they got pregnant with any other method nearly as much.

First one insertion was uncomfortable. After I was fine. The second one insertion hurt and after for the whole day, I was in so much pain. I was cramping all day. Like majorly at work, next time I need to remember to take the whole day off work.
