@leahshomestead: 🦖 I THOUGHT THERE WAS A PTERODACTYL IN MY GREENHOUSE THIS MORNING! 😂 Apparently, when Coturnix quail reach about five weeks old, they start making some pretty STRANGE noises! But unfortunately, that wasn’t the only surprise waiting for me this morning. 😢 I started with 15 Jumbo Coturnix quail, and I was feeling pretty proud of myself because I thought I was going to make it all the way to processing day without losing a single one! Well, this morning I found one that hadn’t made it. And honestly, I have NO IDEA what happened! I’ve started noticing them chasing and picking on each other, and I’m learning that as quail mature, their behavior can really start changing, especially with the males! I’m wondering if fighting had something to do with it, but I really don’t know. That’s the thing about raising animals. No matter how much you learn, there’s always something new that catches you off guard! For those of you who raise Coturnix quail, have you noticed more aggression around five weeks old? #RaisingQuail #Homesteading #CoturnixQuail

Hunt Homestead :
The dinosaur sound is the rooster crow. If you have too many males in one location they will fight to death, literally. We found this out the hard way.

pterodactyl noises are the boys crowing, and some just can't cohabit nicely :(

It takes me 10 minutes a bird from death to butchered- it’s extremely easy and fast compared to chickens. The noise your hearing is the roosters crowing.

You may have to many males per female. Should be one male to 5 or 6 hens

If you have them just for meat and not for looks, next time get a color where the males can be indetified by a plumage. They're really mean, they just scalped one of my hens and she'll be blind on one eye so unfortunately I have to cull her. They're already half year and never fought. I'm considering getting rabbits instead of quails, they're the only profitable animals I have but they also cause the most troubles.

sabi :
The sounds are male vocalization (like crowing in roosters). When you have more then one male in this little amount of space they can definitely kill each other. Thats why they should be kept as 1:10 males:females long term or buchered around five weeks old.

I find that quails are worth it when you are breeding your own birds for meat.

😂 you have some males in there . They will pick on each other if there are too many males in there. It’s best if you grow them out til about 8 - 10 weeks and they are super easy and quick to process.

I had jumbo browns that did very well even in tight quarters. I had some specialty white quail and they fought. If I ever do it again I am going to stick with the most basic quail possible.

They are easy to process. Their skin is thin like a rabbit. You can pull the breast off with your bare hands. About 30 mins to do the whole batch.

They are going to be very small at 6 weeks. Not much meat. Processing them is very fast.
