“Beer at Its Best,” is one of Nigeria’s earliest surviving commercial advertising films. Produced by Niger Films in Lagos for Nigerian Breweries, it promoted Star Lager and captured a fascinating glimpse of 1950s Nigeria. Star Lager was introduced in June 1949 at Nigerian Breweries’ Iganmu brewery, becoming the first beer brewed locally on a commercial scale in Nigeria. At a time when imported drinks dominated the market, Star was marketed as a proudly Nigerian product made to international standards. The film documented modern brewing, bottling and distribution, while also capturing everyday social life in Lagos and beyond. It was part of an early cinema advertising era that brought Nigerian-made brands to audiences through motion pictures. Today, “Beer at Its Best” is more than an advert. It is a rare window into Nigeria’s early advertising industry, industrial growth and changing consumer culture.
