As I sit with Ephesians 4:31-32, I find myself slowing down, truly examining it and letting it examine me.
As I sit with Ephesians 4:31-32, I find myself slowing down, truly examining it and letting it examine me. "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." I keep coming back to those first words: 'let all be put away.' Not hide it. Not excuse it. Not pass it down. Just put it away, lay it down, like a heavy coat I've worn too long. Examining each word reveals a pattern, a reflection of myself. I see how one thing can lead to the next if I don't stop it in time. Bitterness. This feels like the starting point. It's quiet, a root you don't see growing but feel. It's the unaddressed hurt, the swallowed disappointment. Left alone, it spreads, changing how I see and hear others. I'm learning that bitterness doesn't punish the person who hurt me—it poisons me. Wrath. This is the explosion, when bitterness finally breaks through. It's the raised voice, the harsh text, the reaction regretted moments later. Wrath burns everyone close to me. Anger. This is different; often quiet, a slow burn. It's replaying conversations, holding onto the right to stay mad. I'm asking myself, "Have I been nursing this, keeping it alive because letting it go feels like losing?" Clamor. This is anger's sound when it leaves my heart and enters my home. Shouting, arguing, needing to be louder. My children and loved ones feel its heavy atmosphere, stealing peace without solving anything. Evil speaking. This one hits hard, given my gratitude for words. Words can build or tear down. Evil speaking uses words to insult, gossip, slander, to make someone feel small. I question if my words build up or break down my family. Malice. "With all malice." I understand now—malice is the fuel. It's wanting someone to hurt as I hurt, wanting revenge. I no longer want to live with that in my heart. But Paul doesn't leave me there. He tells me what to put on, and hope rises as I examine verse 32. Be kind to one another. Kindness isn't just being nice when I feel like it; it's love in action. Choosing a gentle tone, saying "I love you" first, doing a small good thing. Kindness is a decision before it's a feeling. Tenderhearted. This word stops me. It means a soft heart. Has mine hardened? A hard heart judges; a tender heart understands. I want to see people as Jesus does—not just for what they did, but for what they're going through. Forgiving one another. This is the hardest, yet most freeing. Forgiveness doesn't condone or forget; it releases the debt. It means saying, "I will no longer make you pay me back." Forgiveness isn't a one-time act; sometimes it's a daily choice until my heart truly believes it. Paul gives the reason: "Even as God in Christ forgave you." This changes everything. I forgive not because others earned it, but because I have been forgiven. Jesus forgave me when I was broken; He loved me first. As I finish examining this passage, I ask myself: What am I still carrying that God wants me to put away? And what kind word can I put on today in its place? Darkness doesn't leave when I yell at it. Darkness leaves when I turn on the light. And that light is Jesus, shining through me, one word, one choice, one act of forgiveness at a time. #Ephesians #Bibleverse #FollowerofChrist #ThankyouJesus #SpreadtheWord
