@thetimes: Why did Florida’s Hispanic voters turn on Donald Trump in his own backyard? While the Sunshine State may not have seen a complete "blue tsunami," the latest election results revealed worrying signs for Republicans in the heartland of Trumpism. Trump-backed Byron Donalds retained the governorship, but his margin of victory was just 1.4 percentage points—far narrower than expected in a state Trump carried by 13 points in 2024. The Senate race offered another major surprise. Democratic socialist Angie Nixon won 48 per cent of the vote against Ashley Moody. Nixon’s strong performance proved that the socialist label was not necessarily a dealbreaker in one of the most heavily Hispanic corners of America, despite many voters having family histories of fleeing left-wing regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. In total, Democrats flipped 16 seats in the Florida House, leaving Republicans with their smallest majority since 1996 and stripping them of their supermajority. #midterms #us #swingstate #america #donaldtrump
