Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG) holds a singular and historic place in Sierra Leone’s educational landscape. As one of the first all-girls secondary school in the country, FSSG was founded not merely to educate girls, but to redefine what girls could become in a society where advanced education especially in science was largely reserved for boys. The Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG) was the first girls' school in Sierra Leone to build a dedicated science laboratory block, which was completed in 1967. The school then introduced a pure science curriculum. What set Freetown Secondary School for Girls apart from its inception was its bold investment in science education. FSSG became the first all-girls school in Sierra Leone to establish a state-of-the-art science laboratory, at a time when laboratory-based science learning was rare even in co-educational or boys’ schools. Why the Science Lab Mattered The establishment of this laboratory was revolutionary. It: • Introduced hands-on experimental learning in biology, chemistry, and physics • Allowed girls to move beyond theory into practical scientific inquiry • Prepared students for GCE science examinations at the highest level • Challenged entrenched gender norms that suggested science and technology were “male domains” Through this lab, FSSG produced generations of young women who went on to become doctors, pharmacists, nurses, engineers, scientists, educators, and public servants, both in Sierra Leone and across the diaspora. A National Standard for Girls’ Education At a national level, FSSG’s science laboratory became a benchmark. It demonstrated that: • Girls could excel in rigorous STEM disciplines when given equal resources • Investment in girls’ science education yields long-term national dividends • Educational equity is not symbolic it is infrastructural Many schools that later introduced science laboratories followed the model first proven successful at FSSG.
