Instead of repeatedly filling and emptying bags, dry leaves are collected in a Rubbermaid BRUTE trash can and broken into smaller pieces with a string trimmer. The spinning trimmer line rapidly chops through the leaves, allowing considerably more material to fit inside the container. The process works through the high-speed rotation of the trimmer's flexible cutting line. As it strikes the leaves, the material tears into smaller fragments that settle more densely than whole leaves. Depending on their dryness and how thoroughly they are shredded, leaves can lose a substantial amount of their original bulk. Smaller fragments also provide more exposed surface area for microorganisms to break down during composting. Shredded autumn leaves can be useful for compost piles, garden beds, and soil protection, where they help retain moisture and gradually return organic matter to the ground.
