@downinnadesert: Three suspects, including two 16-year-olds, have been arrested in a string of burglaries at the former Echo Canyon School campus that caused more than $280,000 in losses, according to Phoenix police. Police say four people broke into the closed campus near 62nd Street and Camelback Road in October. Over several days, they allegedly went back into multiple buildings and rooms, stealing and damaging computer equipment and other property. Scottsdale Unified School District voted to close the school last year, but the campus is still used for community events and to store district equipment. The district reported about $230,000 in stolen or damaged computer hardware and another $51,000 in property damage. Detectives linked the break-ins to the "urban exploring" social media trend, where people go into buildings they believe are abandoned and post what they find online. Police say the activity grew into multiple felony burglary and criminal damage offenses. On Oct. 30, police detained two suspects in north Scottsdale. One of them, 18-year-old Blake Eldredge, allegedly admitted to taking part and led investigators to a third suspect and to where more stolen property was hidden. That suspect was arrested in Mesa, and a second search warrant turned up more evidence. Eldredge was booked into jail on multiple felony charges. The two 16-year-olds have not been named. Police have not released details on the fourth suspect. Source: Phoenix Police Department, FOX 10 Phoenix #Arizona #Phoenix #Arcadia #UrbanExploring #ScottsdaleUnified

Exploring abandoned places isn’t some new trend that started on social media. People have been documenting forgotten buildings, researching their history and exploring places left behind for years. An explorer is not automatically a thief or a vandal. There’s a difference between appreciating an abandoned location and breaking shit, stealing property or destroying what’s left of it. The actions of a few people shouldn’t define an entire community. Urbex comes with risks and people should understand that, but let’s not act like everyone who explores abandoned places is out there committing crimes for views. Sometimes people just want to get out, have fun, discover forgotten places, appreciate the architecture and experience something different. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the thrill of exploration while respecting the places you visit. Not everything has to be a trend or have some deeper meaning. Sometimes you just enjoy exploring.
