In the nursing world, I say we encourage as much independence as safely possible to maintain dignity and facilitate growth.

I saw a lady do a video that addressed issues like this. She was a teacher and she did an exercise with her students to show how doing the same thing for each child wasn’t appropriate. The first child she said u got a cut on ur arm here’s a bandaid for ur arm. The next kid she said u got a bump on ur head, here’s a bandaid for ur arm. She went around the room giving each kid a different issue but gave them all a bandaid for their arms. Then she asked them if giving them all the same thing actually helped them with their issue. They understood that just because someone got something different doesn’t mean they were treated unfairly it was based on needs. So when a classmate needs a snack due to being diabetic, the kids understood.

If you want your daughter to receive identical care as the other child in the same breath as "shouldn't they be somewhere else", it stands to reason that your daughter also should be wherever that someplace else is too!

Some parents are exhausting. Equal ≠ identical. I think of the image of the 3 given 3 ladders to see over the fence. If they each receive identical ladders, but one kid is 6” shorter, she needs a bigger ladder. They get the same ability to see over the fence, but not identical ladders.

What looks like special attention could be a safety net for the child or other children. One particular child was provided special dolls and toys. This child was often shadowed by her caregiver. The extra attention was needed so she wouldn’t hurt herself or other children. The toys and dolls were used as distractions to redirect her from biting, kicking, scratching, pulling hair, yanking collars or overturning furniture. All of this was done while the parent was seeking a diagnosis.

Ehhhhhh I agree with this up to a point in regards to inclusion . In public schooling where curriculum needs to be met a child needing and or requiring more attention aide etc can take away from the remaining children while are ready capable and prepared to move forward.

I had one child who couldn’t sit up or hold their head up at one year old. At the same time I had another child who climbs up everything. I kept telling her get down get down get down. Then I built a room that was padded ad she could climb jump and swing off everything everywhere. While spending the extra time to help the other one sit up, hold his head up l, hold his bottle etc. both had needs they just look different. Both need are important.

In the daycare my son was, his childcare assistant had one less child than the other groups. And they even ordered toys especially for him. The other children could only play with them if my son wasn't using them.

Why is it so hard for parents to explain feelings to their own damn kids. She came home and felt left out? "It's because you're such a big girl and you do such a good job on your shoes all by yourself! She's helping him until he's able to do it himself too, just like mommy used to help you!"

This is crazy. It shows the kids about special needs people and promotes compassion. I would tell my child to help so everyone feels included. Some people say special needs people don’t contribute to society and take away from society. Special needs people, say lije down syndrome, are a lesson in patience, love, compassion. They gave a pure heart. These people are blessing for society that doesn’t surround money. In a capitalist society, it’s hard for some people to understand.

This is the entitlement generation! We want independence from our children. Teach them to put their own shoes on and not think they are special and need attention 24/7
