For those of you who don’t know, Irish immigrants faced brutal discrimination in America, especially as more arrived in the early 19th century. Irish people had been coming long before the Great Famine, but hardship pushed many more to leave in the 1820s and 1830s. The famine that began in 1845 brought a much larger wave, including people fleeing hunger and disease. Here in America, being poor and Catholic made Irish newcomers targets. They were blamed for taking jobs, paid less, and met with hostility rooted in anti-Catholic prejudice.
