I built 3 AI employees. Here's the real bill for each one How much does it really cost to run an AI employee? I built three AI agents that do real business work, and this is the actual bill for each one, line by line. No estimates, the real numbers from the builds. 1. AI receptionist: an AI voice agent that answers the phone, books jobs and passes hard calls to a person (built on Retell). About 13 cents a minute, all in: the voice system 5.5¢, the AI model 4¢, the voice 1.5¢, card redaction 1¢, the knowledge base 0.5¢. Plus $2 a month for the phone number. A five-minute call costs about 63 cents. 2. AI IT help desk inside Microsoft Teams: a Copilot Studio agent that fixes what it can from the IT guide, logs tickets and gets the manager's approval. About 10 cents a ticket in our tests. The expensive mistake: the default model used almost 23 credits for one simple answer. A small model did the same kind of answer for about 1.5. Fifteen times cheaper. Pick the model before you test. 3. AI proposal writer: a deal moves in the CRM and a branded four-page proposal lands in Google Drive, waiting for approval (n8n + Claude Skills). About 5 cents a proposal. The whole build cost 60 cents. The part nobody tells you about AI costs: building costs more than running. The AI receptionist cost about $30 to build and test, and only about $3 of that was real calls. Your first setup always costs more than the first month of work. My rules for AI automation costs: - Price every job, not the month. - Start on a small AI model, and only move up if your tests fail. - Let plain code do the fixed work, because code doesn't burn tokens. Useful for small business owners, agencies and anyone selling AI services who wants real numbers before pricing an AI agent, a voice AI receptionist or an AI workflow. Step-by-step lessons on building AI employees, from the very beginning all the way to real systems, are inside my community. If you're interested, the link is in my profile. #aiautomation #aiagents #aiemployee #claude
