@hens_and_honeybees_: If you own chickens, then you might be familiar with the dreaded death sentence called “Marek’s Disease.” Well… it unfortunately came to our flocks this spring. It was horrible watching healthy chickens suddenly take a turn for the worst and have to be put down. And what’s crazy? Is once one bird has it… it’s in your whole flock… it’s just that some are susceptible to it and some aren’t. Our flocks have an incredible space, the best feed, the best treats, the best supplements, but I still couldn’t stop the spread. So what am I doing now? Researching… studying… testing… I may be young, I may not have a health or science degree… But I am stubborn… and that works to my advantage. I want to hear every experience people have had with Marek’s, I want to hear every wacky way anyone has ever treated tumors successfully. Could this road be a dead end? Maybe… but we won’t know for sure unless we try our hardest and look for any cracks. #chickens #animalhealth #pnw #homestead #farmlife

Backyard Fun :
Were your chickens that got sick vaccinated? I had a chicken that I think got Marek’s and came from a hatchery that vaccinates so I guess maybe it doesn’t work for every chicken, or…?

Nobody talks about all the cool chickens you hatch and watching them grow and look cooler then to find it dead or just gone with feathers in the yard 😥

What the Flock Homestead :
Chinese skullcap has been credited to helping in both rescue treatment and prevention of spread. We had a scare and I found a fb group that had beautifully organized information with a team that reviewed questions and gave advice. I am so sorry you lost babies. It’s devastating and makes you feel so helpless. I hope you find success!!

When I lived at our last residence, we had a confirmed case of it. It caused lots of death by tumors on spines causing paralysis, vitamin deficiencies till death, spontaneous death. I changed from the cheap food to name brand and the general health improved overall in 6 months. Much less sickness and death. Just an observation.

so maybe a dumb question, but I'm seeing a lot of people saying their vaccinated chickens are the ones getting this disease. my husband and I are 3 years into having chickens (we have roughly 13 or so at any given time) and we've never vaccinated them, but never had any issues in our flock.
1. what are they being vaccinated for?
2. what is the benefit?

I have mareks in my coops, any ideas on how to vaccinate small amounts at home. I haven’t found anything feasible for small flocks. I hatch my own chicks

I love this! I’m a senior in highschool and I’m already taking cte courses for animal care. I plan to pursue vet med working with poultry and focus on chickens. Mine have genuinely changed my life and I know they do the same for other owners too! I feel like because they’re seen as “less important” animals to some people most of the care falls on the owner. My goal is to be as educated as I can on treating all poultry diseases, eventually my goal is to operate on them!
