@averyphillip.s: I've always loved the arts, but since becoming a flight attendant, I've found myself falling even more in love with them. I'II sometimes spend my layovers visiting different museums and exhibits, hoping to see works by some of my favorite artists in person. Honestly, it amazes me that a still piece of artwork can make me feel such big emotions without me even fully understanding what I'm looking at or what the artist intended. Like how does that even happen?! This particular exhibit at @sfmoma brings together modern and contemporary Korean art, exploring the ways artists engage with identity, culture, history, and everyday life. What I loved most was how it encouraged you to experience the work for yourself vs. feel like you needed to know every detail or have the "right" interpretation to appreciate it. I found myself especially drawn to the works of Han Youngsoo and Chang Ucchin, and I definitely felt a little giddy seeing Yun Hyong-keun's Umber-Blue in person. But my favorite part of the exhibit was probably the "I Don't Know But I Like It" section, because art doesn't need a long, detailed explanation for someone to connect with it. Sometimes you just like it. Sometimes it makes you feel something you can't quite put into words, and I think there's something really special about that. Claude Monet once said, "Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love." I think about this a lot when visiting exhibits. There's so much to learn about art, but I don't think understanding everything about a piece has to come before appreciating it. A few of my favorites from this section were Bonjour Mademoiselle Levy, displayed on the side wall to the left just as you enter (which I almost missed!), and an untitled work by Izumi Kato, which I have deemed one of my favorite pieces of the collection. I also found myself really drawn to Photo Buddha, but I think that one deserves its own conversation, at a later time. This is easily one of my favorite exhibits l've visited! Shoutout to @americamom and @hyoeunkim_! You did an incredible job bringing this project to life. This is definitely an exhibit l'Il be thinking about long after leaving the museum! 🤍 "Today, in this room, l am also just a person looking." #rmxsfmoma #sfmoma #yoursfmoma
