The propaganda I was fed was that the fetus was alive and was conscious at like the immediate point of conception. So when an abortion happened they suck it up with a vacuum and the fetus would panic, clawing and squealing (as my schizo aunty put it) as it was taken out. Was quite the image for an 8 yo to imagine
