@mrsmillerteaches4th: Just coming here to say that sometimes it’s hard for ME as a TEACHER to teach these ways!! But I then have to remind myself I’m teaching for them, and not for me ❤️ if you’re in the same boat, whether parent or teacher, that’s okay too!! 🫶🏻
My issue is they aren't given enough time/opportunities to PRACTICE their chosen strategy. I feel like we are learning a new strategy each day then boom moving on...

I taught gr 6 last year & taught mostly old school way of doing math unless the student needed differentiation. Their EQAO passing rate increased 30% from previous years. 🤷🏽♀️Of course the thinking part was unfortunately still the lowest scores.

I teach 2nd grade, and we have to teach all these different ways for addition and subtraction with and without regrouping and the kids get very overwhelmed as well and switching different strategies, AND I also see that this benefits lots of kids but it is just overloading their brains!!

No seriously! My kids get SO confused with all the different strategies. They complain all the time and ask why we can’t just learn one

I started picking which method I taught which kid in small groups 🤷🏼♀️and I love seeing the connection between all of the methods but honestly I feel like that’s something I need to understand more than they do

i get that but one year i taught only one strategy (the standard algorithm) and they struggled so bad! anytime i teach multiple strategies i always build in days they can practice

This is so honest. Teaching math the new way when you learned it the old way is a whole learning curve on top of everything else. Your fourth graders are lucky to have a teacher willing to say that out loud.

I totally get the benefits to teaching different strategies for different learners and how some of the “newer” strategies do a way better job at giving students a conceptual understanding, (here’s my but) BUT I think my biggest struggle is that I’m finding a lot of students struggle with then picking a strategy… that showing them so many different strategies confuses them in a way.

Hey Molly, year 6 math teacher here! I just wanted to first encourage you that yes it is HARD going against how you learned to do math when teaching these new strategies. I felt the exact same way until I started going to trainings on vertical alignment of how my standards in 6th grade were going to build as they got older. Now I would not have been ready for those trainings until I felt confident in my grades standards. This encouraged me in seeing that why I may want to teach a shortcut to a skill just to move on, it does not help them in the long run because that why piece is sooo important. I want to shape the minds for lifelong learners and not learners who learned something quick! Always remember that learning math goes beyond learning a standard but building determination that students can do tough things. Secondly, thank you for always being vulnerable in your content! I’ve wanted to be a teacher my entire life, and I’m also having many days like you do of feeling like I have to teach so much with little time. I had to teach ratios yesterday with modeling, and I have kids in 6th grade who cannot count and shape in and model and make a comparison. I have the same poster in your room of be strong and courageous, and I have to take a note from it just as much as the kids to remember that I CAN do this even on the tough days.

THIS!!!I’m student teaching in 5th grade right now, Division is so hard and I think some of them are overwhelmed with the choices! I find some of them confuse steps of different methods together! But it’s hard because some of them do work better with different methods!

Even 2 strategies would work. Also having to teaching kids this because everyone is different but then why are they being assessed on that strategy?

i feel like you won’t have adequate time for them to practice each strategy if you’re having to stick to pacing and then they also may confuse the steps because it’s a lot of different strategies. i work with first grade, but i’m in school for elementary so i’m curious, on tests/homework do they get to choose the strategy that works for them or do they have to show proficiency in all methods? i remember learning several methods in elementary school, but i can’t remember if we had to show specific ones on specific questions or not

I teach 2nd, same problems as the comments. But I see both sides. My number sense has grown since teaching these strategies - I can only imagine being 8. But you’re right it’s the lack of time, practice, consistent use of like two strategies then maybe introduce a third. Idk it’s like BOTH SIDES make sense to me!!!

First grade teacher here.. we just finished our 10 million strategies for adding and subtracting within ten- now we’re moving on to numbers greater than 10 and focusing on subtracting- I’m confused. They’re confused. New strategy each day. I miss one way as well!
